How to reclaim space on my external HDD?

Hello,

I have an external 512gb HDD that I connect to my Mac on a daily basis. I currently have on 10.65gb of free space remaining so I decided to begin to delete files that were over ten years old and don’t need anymore.

So far, I’ve managed to move 25gb’s to the mac trashcan but the external HDD still shows as only 10.65gb of space available.

I’m wondering how to go about gaining these extra 25gb back on the HDD so I can then add more files to it for backup and storage.

I own two iMacs located at different locations.
Today I use iCloud Drive to sync files, but in my opinion this is not enough. Ideally I want to be able to store the entire OS in the cloud, and both machines work like a single Mac with everything synced.

Since this is not possible I thought about the idea of buying an external Thunderbolt SSD and booting from that drive.
When I want to use the other Mac I shut down the first Mac, disconnect and move the boot drive to the other Mac and start...

Time machine files in trash

Hi guys, need a little help here:

I deleted some older time machine backups (I shouldn't have, now I know), and they are in the trash.

I'm trying to delete the files but I get a message saying "The operation can’t be completed because the item “Macintosh HD” is in use."

Macintosh HD is my internal drive.

This is a 2013 iMac and it's running on Sierra.

How do I delete the files in the trash?

Why Am I Getting This Icon Next to My Folders if I Haven’t Set Up iCloud? (Uploading Icon)

hi,

I’ve attached a photo of what seems to be that my folders are being uploaded to iCloud. This comes from folders I’ve dragged from my external hard drive into the Mac desktop.

It looks like my folders are being uploaded but I don’t know where and I’ve not set up iCloud on this particular Mac.

What’s happening here?

Hi guys,

I have a 2014 Macbook pro which has had its screen replaced. The brightness controls have now stopped working after I reinstalled MacOS from El Capitan too Mojave. I know there is a way to fix this by replacing the screen firmware chip to the correct one, suppose to be the E1 chip.

What is Identity-FriendAccount on Keychain under iCloud?

Hi,
While accessing my Keychain App on my Macbook minutes ago, I found various keys named "RPIdentity-FriendAccount" of type Application Password, inside each item there is either a telephone number or an email.

Access Control tab properties for those Keychain items shows permission granted to "com.apple.rapport"

What is making me curious and worried is that:
1) Some entries contains telephone numbers from some of my contacts, but there are others with unknown telephone numbers...

How long you hold yo buy your next mac/computer nowadays?

As computers get more and more powerful for common tasks, renovating equipment holds has also extended, as in mobile industry, as new devices specs don't add huge advantages over old ones for the main public.

My wife in example has a 2009 white unibody macbook with added RAM and SSD which works really nice for her work, Office, mail, skype, web surfing and occasional Photoshop works decently on her 10 years old macbook.

Anyone know why I get a popup on my macbook pro saying "your name was mentioned in this chat" every time I receive a new message on a group chat in Messages even if my name is not actually mentioned? What is this feature supposed to do? If it's supposed to actually let me know my name was mentioned then it isn't working because it alerts me for every single new message even when my name isn't mentioned. If it is just supposed to alert me of new messages on a group thread that I'm in then why...

Clean install - not migrating

I'm moving to a new 2019 machine and am doing the clean install approach vs migrating. This should clear a lot of clutter and things potentially slowing the system down.

OSX installs all the default programs - but I have a ton of others in my existing iMac. Not sure how many can be as easy as drag copy (from backup/clone external HDD) - or I need to run new installations on each? Is there any way to tell?

I have never done a clean install since 2008. Every time a new OS came out, I would either migrate or do a TimeMachine restore. I am not sure if it is the mechanical hard drive slowing things down in 2019 (have a 2014 iMac, 24GB ram with the fusion drive), but I want to do a clean install. I have the 2TB iCloud plan, and everything is stored on there. All of my photos, all of my documents, I just ticked it all to be saved.

Am I right in thinking I have no worries just doing a clean install...

Should I rely on iCloud do download everything after a Clean Install?

I use needs to use Adobe Indesign at work and home and its one app the they haven't made a 64bit version of in CS6.

I don't want to start a subscription as the programme works fine - is there an alternative using a virtual machine when Catalina comes in?

I have two Macs -- a late 2012 Mac mini and a 2015 13" MacBook Pro -- that I keep configured very similarly, with pretty much the same apps and data files. The mini has a 2.12 TB Fusion drive. Since the MBP came with only a 256 GB SSD, I boot from an external 1 TB SSD. Both have the latest version of macOS. Time Machine: inherited backups and freeing space

I moved to a new machine, and in or just after the migration process one is presented with a dialog asking if one wants to inherit the old backup. Meaning the backup continues on with the new machine added to the old machines backups, as opposed to starting anew and either keeping or deleting the old machines backups.

Wanting to preserve the old data, I did that, I inherited the old one.

I can't imagine a scenario where I'd want to try to restore the old machine's system, if that's even...

Anyone has same issue? When I watch YouTube on chrome in full screen mode, sometimes the Mail app pops up side by side with the movie.
